Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 programme places strong emphasis on improving the pilgrim experience — through digital services, transport investment and new visitor facilities. For a traveller planning Umrah, though, the questions that matter are practical: which visa route applies to you, which appointments you need to book, how you will travel between cities, and exactly what your accommodation and ground support include.
New services can make planning easier, but a national development goal is not a booking confirmation. Build your itinerary on the rules, services and availability that apply to your travel dates — and get the important details in writing.
1. Know the difference between Nusuk, visas and permits
Nusuk is the official platform for pilgrimage services, including applicable bookings and appointments. What you can access through it may depend on the service, your account, your eligibility and the arrangements in force at the time. One app screen rarely completes every requirement for a journey.
A visa, an Umrah-related permit and a Rawdah appointment each serve a different purpose, and holding one does not automatically make you eligible for the others. Check the current instructions for each activity you plan, and keep every relevant confirmation easy to reach while travelling.
For a Rawdah visit, book through the applicable official service and read the conditions shown in your own account. Availability, eligibility and repeat-visit rules can change, so don’t plan around an old social-media post or a general claim that everyone can visit as often as they like.
- Match your details: names and identity details should be identical across passport, visa and every reservation.
- Read each confirmation: note the time, location and conditions attached to every appointment.
- Keep live access: save copies where permitted, but keep access to the official account — a screenshot may not replace a live or updating credential.
- Check mosque access separately: follow current official instructions for general entry and any seasonal restrictions.
2. Choose the visa route that fits your circumstances
Travellers from India should confirm which route is available for their passport, residence status, existing visas and planned journey. Not every Indian passport holder can use the same online process, and not every traveller has to go through the same intermediary.
A dedicated Umrah visa, an eligible tourist visa and other permitted entry routes can carry different conditions. Use the official visa service or an appropriately authorised provider to establish which route applies to you — and confirm that it permits the activity you intend during your travel dates.
Processing time depends on the application and the checks involved. An advertised turnaround is not a guaranteed decision date, so keep flexibility in any booking that depends on your visa being issued.
Before you pay anyone, ask in writing:
- Who will submit the application, and through which channel?
- Which documents are required from you?
- What exactly does the fee cover?
- What happens if the application is delayed or refused?
A clear written answer is worth far more than a promise of a “guaranteed visa”.
3. Confirm accommodation and transport before payment
Booking and documentation requirements can vary by visa route, season and official instructions. Check whether confirmed accommodation, transport or other evidence is needed for the application you are making — and remember that a rule for one route is not automatically a rule for every visitor.
Ask for the hotel name, room occupancy, meal basis, check-in and check-out dates, transfer details and the provider’s terms in writing. If anything must be submitted or recorded on an official platform, confirm who is responsible and how you will receive the confirmation.

Check requirements again shortly before departure — especially if you are travelling close to the Hajj period. Use the notice issued for your season and route, not dates copied from an earlier year.
4. Treat the Haramain railway as an option, not a fixed promise
The Haramain High-Speed Railway is an established option between the Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah area stations, including the station at King Abdulaziz International Airport. Check the operator’s official station list and timetable when choosing your journey.
Compare door to door, not station to station: include getting to the departure station, the time needed before departure, the train journey itself and the onward transfer to your hotel.
For elderly travellers, families and passengers with reduced mobility, check assistance arrangements, station access and baggage rules, and think realistically about handling suitcases. Compare this with a private road transfer before deciding — for many groups, a direct vehicle from hotel to hotel is simpler.
Announcements about new trains, extra capacity or future completion dates show the direction of investment; they are not evidence that a particular departure, fare or service is available now. Base your plans on the published timetable and fare conditions.
5. Assess hotel access and crowds realistically
Development around the holy cities aims to improve the visitor experience, but what it means for your stay depends on the specific property and the route you will actually walk. More planned hotel capacity does not mean a room is available, affordable or close to your preferred gate on your dates.
When comparing hotels, ask about:
- the practical walking route to the Haram, and any shuttle arrangements;
- accessibility for elderly or less mobile members of your group;
- room occupancy, check-in time and early-arrival options.
A straight-line distance on a map may not reflect the route open during busy periods or local works. Allow extra time for walking, security checks and changes to crowd-management routes, follow on-site instructions, and agree a simple meeting point for your group.
6. Check health requirements for your own trip
Consult the Saudi Ministry of Health’s current guidance for your pilgrimage season and traveller category, and check which vaccinations, certificates or other measures apply to your age, departure country, recent travel and medical circumstances.

Discuss fitness to travel, regular medication and mobility needs as well. Carry appropriate documentation for your medicines, and check airline and destination rules for carrying them.
7. Separate real services from trials and announcements
Digital booking tools, visitor guidance and crowd-management technology are central to the conversation about improving pilgrimage services, but their availability varies across locations, seasons and traveller groups.
A report about a pilot scheme, a smart wristband or a planned system is not confirmation that every Umrah traveller will receive it. Check what is actually included in your booking and follow the instructions from the relevant authority or operator.
Prepare for ordinary travel problems too: keep your phone charged, arrange a reliable data connection, note essential booking contacts on paper, and agree how your group will reconnect if someone loses their phone.
8. Make a practical plan for your group
A well-organised Umrah journey reflects the people travelling, not just the package duration. Families with children, older pilgrims and first-time international travellers may need different transfer times, room arrangements and levels of assistance.
- Before booking: compare the full itinerary, named services, total price and payment terms. Ask which elements are confirmed and which are still subject to availability.
- Before departure: review passport and visa details, appointment conditions, health guidance and airline baggage rules.
- On arrival: know your pickup point, local contact and hotel check-in arrangement.
- During your stay: allow realistic walking and transfer time, follow official instructions and keep key contacts to hand.
- Before returning: reconfirm your airport transfer, departure terminal, baggage allowance and any required documents.
Keep your written quotation and confirmations together. If anything changes, ask for an updated written record of the service and its cost rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
